Expanding Access: e-Saathi Brings Maternal Health Services to Remote Islands

Under the leadership of Sowmya Ramesh, Executive Director of the Population Council Institute, we are excited to announce the launch of e-Saathi in boat clinics to extend essential healthcare services to Assam’s remotest communities!

On April 9th, 2024, e-Saathi took a significant leap forward by reaching out to vulnerable populations residing in remote islands along the 891-kilometer course of the Brahmaputra River. These areas, frequently affected by floods, present challenges for constructing permanent infrastructure and health facilities.

Since its initiation in 2008, the boat clinic services have been vital in delivering healthcare to these hard-to-reach areas. Currently, an average of 18,000 to 20,000 people receive treatment every month through these clinics, benefitting over 2.26 lakh individuals across 341 villages annually.

By expanding e-Saathi’s reach to these boat clinics, we are enhancing the state government’s efforts to provide high-quality and respectful maternal and child health services. Pregnant women and new mothers in these islands will now have access to the askNivi chatbot, offering regular updates related to their pregnancy stage and their newborn’s age, thereby supporting effective management of their health.

Our initial focus is on the Chhaygaon block in Kamrup Rural, aiming to serve over 16,000 people with quality maternal health care. As this partnership grows, the askNivi Maternal Health Journey will extend to even the most remote islands along the river.

Join us in this transformative journey towards building healthier and happier communities in Assam!
