Guedel Airway

Infant Feeding Tube with Graduation

Ref Code: 40180-40186

Device Description:

The Guedel Airway is a crucial medical device designed to maintain a clear and unobstructed airway in patients with reduced Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS). Crafted from rigid plastic, this tube is positioned along the top of the mouth, extending to the base of the tongue. It serves as an adjunct to assist in keeping the airway open, ensuring optimal respiratory function.

Indication for Use:

The Guedel Airway is indicated for use in patients requiring assistance to prevent the tongue from covering the epiglottis, particularly in cases of reduced GCS. This curved metal or plastic tube facilitates airway patency for efficient gas exchange or suctioning, safeguarding patients from potential respiratory complications.

Salient Features of Device:
  • Customized Sizing: Choose the appropriate Guedel Airway size by measuring the distance from the patient’s earlobe to the corner of the mouth. Selecting the correct size is crucial to prevent over-insertion and ensure optimal effectiveness.
  • Patient Positioning: Assist the patient into a comfortable position, typically sitting or supported at an angle of 45°, enhancing the ease of device insertion and overall patient comfort.
  • Cross Finger Technique: Employ the cross finger technique to open the patient’s mouth, allowing for straightforward and secure insertion of the Guedel Airway.
  • Tongue Obstruction Prevention: The device effectively prevents the tongue from obstructing airflow, promoting unimpeded breathing and minimizing the risk of respiratory distress.
Instructions for Use:
  1. Measure: Determine the appropriate size by measuring from the patient’s earlobe to the corner of the mouth.
  2. Position: Place the patient in a comfortable sitting or supported position at a 45° angle.
  3. Open Mouth: Use the cross finger technique to gently open the patient’s mouth.
  4. Insert Guedel Airway: Insert the Guedel Airway carefully, ensuring it extends from the mouth to the base of the tongue.
